Garden X

Now at our third installment at Arroz Estúdios, we’re really getting into the swing of things. Garden number 10 saw big crowds, amazing artists and some of the best food yet! We were lucky enough to have a whole host of musicians fly in from Cork, Ireland, and an artist make his way here from Germany on top of the amazing local talent.

The long-running night saw music by Marinho, Chão de Lis, Jazzfeen, Jar jar jr, Foolish Mortal (Laurie Shaw), Mouradores, The Sunshine Factory, County Vinyl / Steven Rice and a sneaky sunrise set by Mr. Bubble. To treat our eyes as well as our ears, Con O Brien (AKA Kone) put on a live painting session, the result of which can now be seen at Arroz Estúdios.

Garden X Lisbon Marinho Marinho

Marinho was born in Lisbon and raised in front of the TV. That meant plenty of time with Cartoon Network, mid-90’s movies and a growing intimacy with Hollywood’s views on love, relationships and overall human nature.

Now, as a young adult, she tries to come to terms with what lies between overly romanticised expectations and real non-sitcom life. Resolutions come in the form of indie folk songs that she’s written over the years. Marinho’s first single Ghost Notes will be out in March 2019, followed by her debut album.

Garden X Lisbon Chão de Lis 2Chão de Lis

“Lis Floor” was born in Lisbon through a meeting between Cris Gloria and Joana Egypto. Although each have a distinctive artistic trajectory, they both have affinities with the musical traditions of Brazil, which inspired the idea to create a melodic and rhythmic project of this vast repertoire. Rhythms like coconut, congada, baianá, cacuriá, jongo and others are part of this work permeated by simplicity and sense.

Garden X Lisbon Marinho Jazzfeen

Jazzfeen is a mixed bag producer recognised for his off-kilter sounds. With a few tracks released online, Jazzfeen is working towards his first physical release in summer 2019. He is currently working with a number of emerging artists based in Ireland and the UK.

Check his Soundcloud here.

Garden X Lisbon Jar Jar JrJar jar jr

Jarjarjr first demanded attention with his debut release of the Soulection approved beat tape, Fallen Angel, in early 2018. Respected in producer circles worldwide for years with his classic remixes, he has recently cemented his name in Irish hip-hop history with multiple productions on KOJAQUE’s debut album, Deli Daydreams, on Soft Boy Records. He has rocked spots in Cork with the Cuttin’ Heads Collective, appeared alongside Holly Lester at Cabal in October and made a guest appearance at the Sunday Times! 9th Birthday in July. He’s finding his feet in terms of live performance and is undoubtedly one to watch.

Garden X Lisbon Foolish Mortal 7Foolish Mortal (Laurie Shaw)

Foolish Mortal are a three-piece garage rock band from Cork City consisting of Dan O’Sullivan, Mark Waldron-Hyden and Laurie Shaw. Their self-titled first album was written and recorded by Laurie Shaw in between producing his solo projects. The 16 songs boast a fuzzy rock and roll sound conjuring artists like Ty Segall, The Buzzcocks and Kim Fowley.

Check out their release on Sunshine Cult Records here.

And, if you want to check out the most amazing and prolific Laurie Shaw (which we highly recommend doing) then here ya go: https://laurieshawofficial.bandcamp.com

Garden X Lisbon Mouradores 8Mouradores

Mouradores is comprised of Joe Armitage (Eng), Marty Busch (US), Nuno Parra (Pt) and Miguel Almeida (Pt). They formed in the Mouraria district of Lisboa in 2017 and have a unique sound which takes influence from an eclectic range of genres such as hip-hop, psychedelic rock, funk and jazz. There are many whispers around town about this elusive 4 piece. It is known you can’t come away from one of their shows without the general feeling of “holy fuck!”

Garden X Lisbon Sunshine Factory 3The Sunshine Factory

The Sunshine Factory are a 5-piece alternative rock band from Cork, Ireland. Pulling from a variety of influences spanning from shoegaze and krautrock to post-punk and noise-heavy psych that has bagged them support slots from such bands as The KXP, The Orange Kyte, The Underground Youth and an Irish tour with shoegaze legends, The Telescopes. They released their first EP “Cruelest Animal” in November 2017 on their own independent label Sunshine Cult Records to favorable reviews from the likes of The Thin Air, Hot Press Magazine and The Last Mixed Tape. Additionally, they have been featured on The Thin Air’s 18 for ’18. The band plans to release their sophomore EP, recorded live in studio with producer Chris Somers, in Early 2019.

Garden X LisbonCounty Vinyl / Steven Rice

Two-thirds of the infamous County Vinyl took over the DJ duties late into the night on Saturday with an eclectic mix of records and an even more eclectic mix of facial hair. The gruesome twosome partnered up with Arroz Estúdios resident DJ Steven Rice of NLR — Nice Like Rice — to keep those feet tapping and heads bobbing.

Mr. Bubble

Mr. Bubble is working on both his solo project and a side project called “Dub Eclipse” (with fellow Gardener Joseph Moon). Previously, he spent seven moneyless months travelling across 5 countries with only his loop station, keyboard and a korg volcabeat refining both “structured and improvised” arrangements, making each performance a unique experience. Lucky for us, he was up for a sneaky sunrise set.
